In June 2025 Goldback, Inc. announced that the artwork of its first three state series, Utah, Nevada and New Hampshire, had gone out of print. Rather than reprint them, it is redesigning all three, because the original designs cannot carry its newer security features. Utah went first, in 2026. This is what the programme involves, and what it means if you own a classic note or are thinking of buying one.
The short version
The classic Utah, Nevada and New Hampshire designs are out of print and available only while existing stock lasts. New designs replace them one series at a time: the refreshed Utah series launched on 25 August 2026, Nevada’s redesign began in 2026 with a 3 Goldback Limited Early Release, and New Hampshire is due to follow. A classic note keeps exactly the gold it was made with.
What Goldback announced
The announcement, published on 2 June 2025, gave one main reason: the existing artwork of the three oldest series was not compatible with the security features Goldback was introducing. Each series would therefore get new artwork, updated security and new denominations, starting with Utah in 2026 and followed by Nevada and then New Hampshire. The original designs were declared out of print, to remain on sale only while supplies last.
One detail changed along the way. The announcement said the refreshed series would add a ½, a 2 and a 100. By the time Utah’s arrived, Goldback had discontinued the 100 for future series, so the refreshed Utah ladder runs from ¼ to 50. Our guide to why the 100 was discontinued covers that decision.

The refreshed Utah series
Utah was the first Goldback state series, launched in 2019, and it is the first to be redesigned. The refreshed series has new artwork and virtues across eight denominations: ¼, ½, 1, 2, 5, 10, 25 and 50. Each note holds the same gold as its classic counterpart, because gold content is fixed by denomination rather than by design. The new notes also carry the current generation of security features, including UV-reactive ink built into the artwork. A separate 3 Goldback Limited Early Release accompanies the series.
Our Utah collector guide sets the classic and refreshed designs side by side, denomination by denomination.
If you own classic notes
- Nothing about the gold changes. A classic 1 Utah holds 1/1000 of a troy ounce of 24-carat gold, exactly as a refreshed 1 Utah does.
- They remain Goldbacks. They are as legal to own, sell and give in the UK as they were before. Goldbacks have never been UK legal tender, and the redesign does not change that.
- Out of print is not the same as more valuable. A closed design has a fixed supply, which some collectors value, but any premium depends on demand and condition, and nobody can promise one.
- Condition matters more now. If you are keeping classic notes as a set, store them flat and sleeved. Our guide to storing Goldbacks explains how.

If you want to buy
Classic and refreshed notes suit different collectors. Classic Utah, Nevada and New Hampshire notes carry the early history of the format and come in five denominations, 1 to 50. The redesigned series bring the newer security features and the smaller ¼, ½ and 2 notes. Many collectors start with one of each in the same denomination, which shows the difference for the smallest outlay.
We hold classic notes from all three series while our stock lasts, alongside the refreshed Utah notes. Because the classic designs are out of print, supply is finite, and the larger denominations tend to go first.
Questions
Why is Goldback redesigning these three series?
Goldback said the original artwork of its three oldest series could not carry the newer security features, so each needs new artwork rather than a reprint.
Are classic Utah, Nevada and New Hampshire Goldbacks still worth their gold?
Yes. A Goldback’s gold content is fixed when it is made. The redesign changes the artwork of future notes, not the gold in existing ones.
Which series is next?
Goldback’s order is Utah, then Nevada, then New Hampshire. Utah’s refreshed series launched in August 2026 and Nevada’s redesign began with its Limited Early Release in 2026.
Will the redesigned series include a 100?
No. Goldback discontinued the 100 for future series in 2026, so the refreshed Utah series runs from ¼ to 50.
