Utah was the first Goldback state series, and in 2026 it became the first to be refreshed. That makes the 1 Utah the only note in the range you can currently buy in two different artworks — choose the edition below before adding to basket.
Refreshed Edition Current Utah Goldback design
The refreshed Utah 1 Goldback honours the virtue Prudentia, or Prudence, personified as a Ute woman wearing a traditional deerskin dress. The Ute people are the longest continuously living Indigenous inhabitants of present-day Utah.
Prudentia sits upon Utah’s red rocks beneath an open sky, near Delicate Arch. She gazes serenely ahead, reflecting the judgement and foresight shown by those who navigate the land with respect and care.
Beside her rests a mountain lion, while a bristlecone pine — carried over from the original Utah 1 Goldback design — stands firmly behind her. Within the UV layer, a hidden wolf howls beneath the glow of the moon.
The enduring principle inscribed within the design reads: “Wisdom gives life to those who have it.”

Classic Design Original Utah artwork
The original Utah Goldback design features the virtue Prudentiae, or Prudence, represented as a Native American woman with imagery drawing from the five most prominent Native American tribes in Utah: the Ute, Paiute, Goshute, Shoshone and Navajo.
Prudence is seated upon sandstone beside an ancient bristlecone pine, one of the longest-lived trees in the world. She gazes into a mirror, symbolising perspective, experience and hindsight, while a serpent-shaped copper bracelet represents the trials and choices encountered through life.
At her feet is a chipmunk, representing preparation and foresight. A wolf appears alongside her as another symbol of balance and prudence, while Bryce Canyon National Park’s Natural Bridge formation and Canada geese appear in the background.
The words “Deal Prudently” can be found within the artwork, reinforcing the central theme of preparedness, wisdom and thoughtful decision-making.

Which edition should you choose?
If you are buying one note and want the design Goldback is producing now, take the Refreshed Edition. It carries the UV layer and it is what a new Utah collection will be built around going forward.
Take the Classic if you already own Utah notes in the original artwork and want the set to match, or if you specifically want the design that started the whole series in 2019. Once the remaining classic stock is gone it will only be available second-hand.
Who this note suits
The 1 Goldback is the reference denomination — 1/1000 of a troy ounce, the unit every other value is expressed against. Utah is where the series began, which makes the 1 Utah the most historically significant single note in the range and the usual first purchase for someone collecting by state.
The trade-off is the same as any small denomination: at 1/1000 oz the premium over spot is high, and it will always be higher than a Britannia or a bar. Buy this for the artwork, the format and the place it holds in the series — not for gold per pound spent.
UK buyer notes
Yard Mint supplies Goldbacks from UK stock. They are treated as VAT-exempt investment-gold wafers, so there is no VAT to add at checkout.
Goldbacks are not UK legal tender. They can be bought, owned, sold, collected and voluntarily exchanged where both parties agree, but no UK business is required to accept one. They also do not share the Capital Gains Tax exemption that applies to Britannias and post-1837 Sovereigns, which are sterling currency. VAT and CGT are separate questions with different answers.
Resale depends on the gold price, the condition of the note and buyer demand at the time. A collector premium is not guaranteed.
