Description

The 1 is the denomination the whole series is measured against: 1/1000 of a troy ounce of 24-carat gold, one unit of account, the note people buy first and then buy again in quantity. Florida gives it Harmonia — Harmony — and sets her among the earliest Spanish settlers.

The artwork

A settler stands at the centre, framed by the things that had to be held in balance during the first European colonisation of the peninsula: nature, culture and history. Behind her is St. Augustine, the oldest European settlement in the United States, and the Castillo de San Marcos, the fort built to hold that foothold in La Florida.

The supporting detail is dense, and each element is doing a job:

The sabal palm, orange tree and orange blossom — Florida's native growth and the beginnings of its agricultural trade.
A Spanish galleon on the horizon, for the crossing itself and the risk it carried.
A Spanish guitar engraved Terra Incognita, tying Old World craft to unmapped New World ground.
A flamingo, one of the state's signature birds, closing the loop between the settlers and the environment they had to live inside.

The principle the design affirms is “honor in discovery”: adaptability rather than conquest.

Standard EditionGeneral production run+

This is the general production 1 Florida Goldback. Same artwork, same gold content as the Alpha, minus the first-run marking.

Most buyers end up here, and sensibly so. It costs less, and if you are buying for the metal and the design rather than for production history, nothing about the note in your hand is different.

Alpha Edition (α)First production run+

Alphas are drawn from the series' first production run. You identify one by the small α symbol beside the mintage date; some Alpha issues also carry a differently coloured border.

Gold content is identical to the standard note. What costs more is collector appetite for first-run provenance, not extra metal, and there is no guarantee that appetite holds.

Which edition should you choose?

If the note is going into a set, a frame or a gift, take the Standard: you get the same gold and the same Harmonia design for less money. Choose the Alpha only if first-run provenance is something you actively collect and you accept that its premium rests on demand rather than on metal.

Who this note suits

The 1 is the natural first Goldback and the natural building block. It is the denomination people use to start a Florida set, to hand out as a small gift, or to hold a real gold note before deciding whether to go up to a 5 or a 10.

At 1/1000 troy oz, the gold in a single note is a modest amount of metal, so the premium over the spot price is high — lower than the quarter or the half, but still well above what you would pay for the same weight in bullion form. You are buying the artwork, the format and the collectability alongside the gold. If gold per pound spent is the only measure that matters to you, a Britannia, a Sovereign or a cast bar will beat this note and it is not close.
