There is no 5, 10, 25 or 50 Washington D.C. Goldback, and there is not going to be one. This is a single limited release of 250,000 notes marking the 250th anniversary of the United States, which makes it one of the few Goldbacks you can finish collecting the day it arrives.

The artwork

The design is entirely new rather than an adaptation of an existing state note, and it was issued alongside a step up in the production itself:

• Upgraded security features built into the note.
• Improved UV-reactive ink, so the hidden layer reads more clearly under a lamp.
• An all-new design created for the anniversary.

The intent is a note that looks back at the nation's history while carrying the current generation of production technology, rather than treating the commemorative and the technical sides as separate exercises.

Who this note suits

This one is for the collector who wants a distinctive single note rather than a full denomination set. Every state series asks you to chase several notes to feel complete; Washington D.C. does not, because only one denomination exists. It holds 1/1000 of a troy ounce of 24-carat gold, the same content as a standard 1 Goldback, so it slots neatly beside your other 1s in an album or a frame. It also suits anniversary and commemorative collectors, and anyone buying a gift with a date attached to it.

Two honest points before you buy. The mintage cap of 250,000 is a genuine limit but not a small one, so treat any future collector premium as unknown rather than likely. And as with every Goldback, the premium over the gold price is high, because the design, the security work and the distribution all cost money on top of the metal. A Britannia, a Sovereign or a plain bar will give you more gold for the same outlay. Buy this for the anniversary, the artwork and the fact that it stands alone.

UK buyer notes

Yard Mint supplies Goldbacks from UK stock. They are treated as VAT-exempt investment-gold wafers, so there is no VAT to add at checkout.

Goldbacks are not UK legal tender. They can be bought, owned, sold, collected and voluntarily exchanged where both parties agree, but no UK business is required to accept one. They also do not share the Capital Gains Tax exemption that applies to Britannias and post-1837 Sovereigns, which are sterling currency. VAT and CGT are separate questions with different answers.

Resale depends on the gold price, the condition of the note and buyer demand at the time. A collector premium is not guaranteed.
