5 Utah Goldback, available in the refreshed Devotionis design and the classic Veritas design

Two different women stand on the 5 Utah Goldback depending on which version you choose: Devotionis beneath the Salt Lake City Temple on the refreshed note, or Veritas with her raised lantern on the original. Both carry 1/200 troy oz of 24-carat gold.

Refreshed Edition Current Utah Goldback design +

The refreshed 5 carries Devotionis, Devotion, standing for the unwavering faith of the settlers who arrived in the mid to late 1800s.

The Salt Lake City Temple rises behind her, a landmark that records what those pioneers committed, sacrificed and built. In her hands are a Bible and a basket of early crops harvested in the valley, faith and provision held together.

A native cottonwood grows behind her with the word "Deseret" carved into the trunk in the Deseret alphabet. Hold it under UV light and the English translation appears.

From the cottonwood's branches hangs a beehive for industry and the spirit of labour that Utah is so closely identified with. Honeybees circle Devotionis, and UV-reactive ink brings out a honeybee necklace resting against her chest.

The whole scene is about faith-driven work and what it built. Inscribed within the design is the enduring principle: "Out of small things proceedeth that which is great."

This is the current edition supplied as standard. If you would rather have the original Utah artwork, the Classic Design remains available while stocks last.

Classic Design Original Utah artwork +

The original 5 belongs to Veritas, Truth, drawn as a Utah pioneer in reference to the great migration of the first settlers into the Salt Lake Valley in 1847.

Her hair is caught by the wind and her right hand raises a lantern, throwing light towards the viewer: truth lighting the uncertain stretches of a journey. The phrase "Walk in Truth" runs with the design.

A compass sits in her apron pocket as a moral guide, pointing west after the settlers' own migration. In her left hand she carries two books titled "Judah" and "Joseph", standing for the Bible and the Book of Mormon and the part those scriptures played in guiding the Utah pioneers towards religious freedom.

  • A pool fed by a waterfall — truth is as necessary as fresh water.
  • A deer drinking from the pool — a messenger of truth.
  • The Christian fish symbol, set within the flowing stream.
  • An eagle watching over the scene from above.
  • The North Star, shining through a dusky, clouded sky — a constant light even when partly hidden.

She is barefoot, which is the quiet point of the picture: the path of truth can be hard going, and the hardship takes nothing away from the truth being followed.

Which edition should you choose?

The gold content, size and specification are identical either way, so this is purely a question of artwork and availability.

  • Refreshed Design — the current edition, supplied as standard, and the version to pick if you are starting a new Utah set or want the note that matches what is being produced now.
  • Classic Design — the original Veritas artwork from the first Goldback state series, available while remaining stocks last. The one to pick if you are completing an existing classic Utah set or you simply prefer the older design.

Who this note suits

The 5 is the middle of the Utah range and the denomination most people settle on once they have handled a smaller note. It suits set-builders, buyers who want a single note worth framing, and anyone giving a more substantial gift than a ¼ or ½ allows.

It contains 1/200 troy oz of 24-carat gold, five times the metal of a 1 Goldback, with two hundred notes to the troy ounce.

The premium over the gold price is still meaningful here, even though it eases as the denomination rises. You are paying for original artwork, UV printing, the polymer structure and manufacture, and none of that is free. On gold per pound a Britannia, a Sovereign or a cast bar wins comfortably. The 5 Goldback is bought as fractional gold you can display and hand round, not as the cheapest route to an ounce.

UK buyer notes

Yard Mint supplies Goldbacks from UK stock. They are treated as VAT-exempt investment-gold wafers, so there is no VAT to add at checkout.

Goldbacks are not UK legal tender. They can be bought, owned, sold, collected and voluntarily exchanged where both parties agree, but no UK business is required to accept one. They also do not share the Capital Gains Tax exemption that applies to Britannias and post-1837 Sovereigns, which are sterling currency. VAT and CGT are separate questions with different answers.

Resale depends on the gold price, the condition of the note and buyer demand at the time. A collector premium is not guaranteed.

This is general information, not personal tax or investment advice. Tax treatment depends on current rules and individual circumstances.
