25 Utah Goldback, available in the refreshed Disciplina snowboarding design and the classic Victoria suffrage design

The classic 25 carries the first Goldback design ever drawn — originally the artist's audition piece for the series. The refreshed version swaps suffrage banners for a snowboarder catching air above Park City. Both hold 1/40 troy oz of 24-carat gold.

Refreshed Edition Current Utah Goldback design +

The refreshed 25 belongs to Disciplina, the virtue of Discipline, drawn as a seasoned snowboarder mid-air over Park City, host of the 2002 Winter Olympics.

Her jacket carries an embroidered Olympic torch, and the underside of the board shows Utah's beehive, tying the modern sporting scene back to the state's older symbols.

There is a hidden layer to find as well. Under UV light a snowy owl appears soaring beneath Disciplina, and a yeti can be picked out treading through deep snow along the treeline.

Disciplina stands for the structure, commitment and persistence that athletes live by at the top of their sport — not only the discipline it takes to win, but the harder kind needed when progress is slow and demands repetition.

The enduring principle inscribed within the design reads: "Press toward the mark." — Philippians 3:14.

This is the current edition supplied as standard. If you would rather have the original Utah artwork, the Classic Design remains available while stocks last.

Classic Design Original Utah artwork +

The original 25 features Victoria, Victory, marking the history of women's suffrage in Utah. It occupies a particular place in the series: this was the first Goldback design ever created, produced as the artist's audition piece.

Victoria carries a banner reading "Votes Counting Since 1870". Utah came early to women's suffrage, and Seraph Young became the first woman in the United States to cast a ballot under a women's equal suffrage law when she voted there in 1870.

Beside her walks a child, standing for the women who marched with their children and for the passing on of truth, responsibility and hard-won freedom. The branch the child carries makes the point that tomorrow's generation ends up steward of today's victories. The design's message is "Go on to Victory."

  • In her left hand, a flag topped by the Chi-Rho symbol.
  • In her right, bundled wheat — separate victories gathered into something greater than any of them alone.
  • A falcon soaring behind her for faithful action, and for remembering who secured the freedoms now taken for granted.
  • A straight path beneath her feet, walled in stone on one side for progress built one victory at a time, and lined with aspen on the other for connection, shared heritage and the interconnectedness of humanity.

The mountains behind Victoria were taken from the view at Alpine, Utah, seen from the building where the original Goldback designs were drawn.

Which edition should you choose?

The specification is identical on both, so this comes down to artwork and availability.

  • Refreshed Design — the current edition supplied as standard, and the one to choose if you are building a Utah set now or want the Disciplina artwork with its UV layer.
  • Classic Design — the original Victoria artwork, the first Goldback design ever created, available while remaining stocks last. The obvious choice for anyone who values the series' starting point or is completing a classic Utah set.

Who this note suits

The 25 is a collector's note more than a starter note. It suits buyers who want one significant piece rather than a spread of small denominations, anyone framing a single design, and set-builders working towards the top of the Utah range.

It holds 1/40 troy oz of 24-carat gold, forty notes to the troy ounce, which makes it one of the more metal-dense Goldbacks available.

Even so, the premium over the gold price is real. Original artwork, UV printing, the polymer structure and manufacture all sit on top of the metal, and a Britannia, a Sovereign or a cast bar will beat this note on gold per pound. The 25 is bought for the design and the collection, and the honest version of the maths says so.

UK buyer notes

Yard Mint supplies Goldbacks from UK stock. They are treated as VAT-exempt investment-gold wafers, so there is no VAT to add at checkout.

Goldbacks are not UK legal tender. They can be bought, owned, sold, collected and voluntarily exchanged where both parties agree, but no UK business is required to accept one. They also do not share the Capital Gains Tax exemption that applies to Britannias and post-1837 Sovereigns, which are sterling currency. VAT and CGT are separate questions with different answers.

Resale depends on the gold price, the condition of the note and buyer demand at the time. A collector premium is not guaranteed.

This is general information, not personal tax or investment advice. Tax treatment depends on current rules and individual circumstances.
