Description

The 2 is the only Florida note that hands the composition to the people who were already there. Fortitudo — Fortitude — is a Seminole woman standing upright in a traditional dugout canoe, and the whole design is about staying balanced in water that does not stay still.

The artwork

She holds her footing in the canoe rather than sitting in it, which is the visual argument the note is making: balance and resilience as a practised skill, not a slogan. The inscribed principle reads “Navigate with purpose”.

The Everglades around her are drawn for their biodiversity, and the species chosen all speak to adaptability:

• The Roseate Spoonbill, wading the shallows.
• The West Indian River Otter.
• The manatee, moving beneath the surface.

A chickee hut sits in the background as a piece of Seminole engineering suited exactly to wetland ground.
