The 1993 5 Yuan Gold Panda Small Date depicts a grown panda sitting on its haunches — a composed, dignified image struck at the Shenyang Mint. Despite a large reported mintage, this is a surprisingly hard-to-find coin today. Many were used in jewellery and others were lost to the melting pot at a time when few collectors were focused on this denomination.
The Chinese Gold Panda programme launched in 1982 and quickly became one of the world's most collected bullion coin series, celebrated for its annually changing reverse designs. Each coin is struck in 24-carat gold and issued as legal tender by the People's Republic of China.
