10 Utah Goldback, available in the refreshed Aeternitas design and the classic Justitia design

A dinosaur found near Moab in 1991 ended up on a gold note. The refreshed 10 Utah Goldback builds its artwork around the Utahraptor and the virtue of Eternity, while the classic version keeps Justitia and her scales beneath the red cliffs.

Refreshed Edition Current Utah Goldback design +

The refreshed 10 honours Aeternitas, Eternity, told through Utah's extraordinary prehistoric past and the 1991 discovery of the Utahraptor near Moab.

The Utahraptor is among Utah's most celebrated prehistoric finds. Aeternitas beside it stands for the endless passage of time and the long, continuing story of creation.

Her cuff is inscribed with the Alpha and Omega symbols, beginning and end. Sand runs through her fingers, time moving constantly and without pause.

An hourglass stands in the foreground as the plainest statement in the design: every age gives way to the next, and the record of what came before outlasts it.

This is the current edition supplied as standard. If you would rather have the original Utah artwork, the Classic Design remains available while stocks last.

Classic Design Original Utah artwork +

The original 10 belongs to Justitia, Justice. She stands in southern Utah with Balancing Rock and the region's red cliffs behind her, wearing the Sunday-best clothing of an early Utah settler.

She carries the traditional emblems of justice — a blindfold, a double-edged sword and a set of scales — which together stand for the impartiality, fairness and decisiveness justice needs if it is to be both right and effective. The phrase "Judge Righteously" accompanies the design.

On the scales themselves sit a cross, a heart and an anchor for faith, charity and hope, placing mercy alongside judgement.

  • A seagull, Utah's state bird, flying overhead with a cricket in its beak ahead of a great desert storm.
  • Those two details point at early settlement stories: gulls devouring the cricket swarms that threatened vital crops, and rain finally breaking a long drought after a united effort of fasting and prayer.
  • In the brush at her feet, a sage hen shelters twelve chicks, reinforcing protection and mercy through biblical imagery.

The effect is a more merciful reading of justice: blessing, protection and restoration standing next to judgement and consequence rather than opposite them.

Which edition should you choose?

Gold content, size and specification are the same on both, so the decision is about artwork and availability.

  • Refreshed Design — the current edition supplied as standard. Choose it if you are starting a Utah set now or want the Aeternitas artwork.
  • Classic Design — the original Justitia artwork from the first Goldback state series, available while remaining stocks last. Choose it to complete an existing classic Utah set.

Who this note suits

The 10 is where the Utah series starts to feel substantial. It suits collectors buying one strong example rather than a spread of small denominations, anyone framing a single note, and set-builders who want the middle of the range covered properly.

It carries 1/100 troy oz of 24-carat gold: ten times the metal in a 1 Goldback, and one hundred notes to the troy ounce.

Be clear about the trade. Even at this denomination you are paying a premium over the gold price for original artwork, the polymer structure, printing and manufacture. A Britannia, a Sovereign or a cast bar delivers more gold for the same outlay, without argument. The 10 Goldback is for buyers who want fractional gold in a form they can display and hand round, and who accept the premium that comes with it.

UK buyer notes

Yard Mint supplies Goldbacks from UK stock. They are treated as VAT-exempt investment-gold wafers, so there is no VAT to add at checkout.

Goldbacks are not UK legal tender. They can be bought, owned, sold, collected and voluntarily exchanged where both parties agree, but no UK business is required to accept one. They also do not share the Capital Gains Tax exemption that applies to Britannias and post-1837 Sovereigns, which are sterling currency. VAT and CGT are separate questions with different answers.

Resale depends on the gold price, the condition of the note and buyer demand at the time. A collector premium is not guaranteed.

This is general information, not personal tax or investment advice. Tax treatment depends on current rules and individual circumstances.
