The half is the second-smallest denomination Goldback makes — 1/2000 of a troy ounce of 24-carat gold. Oklahoma used it for a cattle drive.
The artwork
The virtue is Honestas, Honour, and it is carried by a young cowgirl moving a herd along the Chisholm Trail near Red River Station. The longhorns are branded 1867, the year the trail was formally established.
The detail is all trail life rather than mythology. A worn wagon wheel and a Chisholm Trail marker lie half-buried in the dust. A hawk rides the air above her — freedom, and the vigilance that goes with it. Her expression is calm rather than heroic, which is the point: the honour here belongs to people who did hard work and did it properly.
Along the bottom is Colossians 3:23, inscribed as “Whatever you do, do it heartily.”
Who this note suits
The half sits between the quarter and the 1, and it exists mainly for people who want to build a full Oklahoma set including the small denominations. On its own it is an inexpensive way to hold a Goldback, and it makes a good small gift.
Be realistic about the economics. At 1/2000 oz the gold in this note is worth very little on its own, which means the premium over spot is among the highest of any denomination in the range. That is the price of the format and the artwork, not a pricing error. If you are buying gold by weight, this is not the product to buy.
UK buyer notes
Yard Mint supplies Goldbacks from UK stock. They are treated as VAT-exempt investment-gold wafers, so there is no VAT to add at checkout.
Goldbacks are not UK legal tender. They can be bought, owned, sold, collected and voluntarily exchanged where both parties agree, but no UK business is required to accept one. They also do not share the Capital Gains Tax exemption that applies to Britannias and post-1837 Sovereigns, which are sterling currency. VAT and CGT are separate questions with different answers.
Resale depends on the gold price, the condition of the note and buyer demand at the time. A collector premium is not guaranteed.
This is general information, not personal tax or investment advice. Tax treatment depends on current rules and individual circumstances.
