½ Florida Goldback artwork showing a conquistador kneeling at the Fountain of Youth

1513 is carved into the stone on this note, and the date is the point of it. The ½ Florida carries Spes — Hope — as a Spanish conquistador kneeling at the mythical Fountain of Youth, half a millennium before the state existed.

The artwork

The scene sits in dense tropical growth and deliberately blurs record and legend. The fleur-de-lis marks the age of exploration; the year 1513 etched in stone marks Juan Ponce de León's voyage, prompted by Timucua accounts of restorative waters. What the kneeling figure is really doing is chasing renewal, which is the virtue in plain form.

Around him, the supporting cast is chosen for endurance rather than decoration:

  • The mockingbird, for persistence.
  • The Zebra Longwing butterfly, for transformation.
  • The Florida Cracker horse, for stamina in hard country.
  • A conch shell at the water's edge, honouring the indigenous Timucua whose culture shaped the story.

Behind all of it stands Florida's claim to St. Augustine, the oldest permanent European settlement in the United States. The principle inscribed on the design is “Blessed are the meek”.

Standard Edition General production run +

The general production ½ Florida Goldback, issued with a brown/red border. Artwork and gold content match the Alpha exactly; only the first-run marking is absent.

This is where most buyers land. It is the cheaper route to the note, and for anyone buying the gold and the design rather than the production history there is nothing to separate them in hand.

Alpha Edition (α) First production run, green border +

Alphas come from the first production run and are identified by the small α symbol beside the mintage date. On the ½ Florida there is a second tell: the 2025 Alpha carries a green border, while later issues carry a brown/red one.

The gold content is identical to the standard note. The extra cost reflects collector demand for first-run provenance rather than additional metal, and that demand is not guaranteed to hold.

Never judge Alpha status from a serial number — check for the α itself. Our guide to Alpha Goldbacks explains what you are paying for.

Which edition should you choose?

Take the Standard if you want the design and the gold at the lower price, which covers most set-building and gifting. Take the Alpha if the green border and first-run provenance are the reason you are buying, and you are comfortable that the difference is collector demand rather than metal.

Who this note suits

The ½ is the second rung of the series and a common entry point for anyone who wants something a step above the quarter without committing to a 1 or a 5. It works well for set-building from the bottom up, for a small gift with real gold in it, and for anyone who simply wants to see how a Goldback feels before spending more.

Be honest with yourself about the arithmetic. A half note holds 1/2000 of a troy ounce of 24-carat gold, so the metal value is small and the premium over spot is among the highest in the range — only the quarter is steeper. You are paying for artwork, format and collectability. Measured purely in gold per pound spent, a Britannia, a Sovereign or a bar wins comfortably, and that is the right way round for a note like this.

UK buyer notes

Yard Mint supplies Goldbacks from UK stock. They are treated as VAT-exempt investment-gold wafers, so there is no VAT to add at checkout.

Goldbacks are not UK legal tender. They can be bought, owned, sold, collected and voluntarily exchanged where both parties agree, but no UK business is required to accept one. They also do not share the Capital Gains Tax exemption that applies to Britannias and post-1837 Sovereigns, which are sterling currency. VAT and CGT are separate questions with different answers.

Resale depends on the gold price, the condition of the note and buyer demand at the time. A collector premium is not guaranteed.

This is general information, not personal tax or investment advice. Tax treatment depends on current rules and individual circumstances.
