A woman in colonial dress walks a fog-bound path towards a covered bridge, holding out a candle. It is the second appearance of Veritas — Truth — in the Goldback series, and one of the quieter designs in the whole range.
The artwork
She is not holding the candle for herself. The gesture is an offer: the light is extended outward, towards whoever is behind her on the path. The fog is the point of the composition — obscurity and confusion are where the danger sits, and the light is what gets you through them.
The covered bridge is patterned after one on the Kancamagus Highway, though similar bridges stand across the state. A guardrail runs beside the path, standing for the protective quality of truth: hold on to it and it keeps you on the road.
New Hampshire's state emblems flank her — a purple lilac bush, the state flower, on her left, and a purple finch, the state bird, on her right. The caption below reads “Walk in Truth”.
In the background stands a moose. The choice is more considered than it first looks: a moose has poor eyesight but exceptional hearing and smell, and it is territorial about what it protects. Standing firmly for something you cannot always see clearly is the idea being illustrated.
Who this note suits
The 5 holds 1/200 of a troy ounce of 24-carat gold and is the middle of the New Hampshire range. It carries a lower premium per gram than the 1 or the half, and it is the denomination most people settle on when they want a single note with presence rather than a full set.
The design also frames well. If the artwork is the reason you are buying, the larger 13.01 cm format does more for this composition than the smaller notes do.
What it is bad at, plainly: value by weight. The premium over spot is well above what you would pay for the same gold in a bar or a Britannia, and that gap does not close. Buy the note for the note.
UK buyer notes
Yard Mint supplies Goldbacks from UK stock. They are treated as VAT-exempt investment-gold wafers, so there is no VAT to add at checkout.
Goldbacks are not UK legal tender. They can be bought, owned, sold, collected and voluntarily exchanged where both parties agree, but no UK business is required to accept one. They also do not share the Capital Gains Tax exemption that applies to Britannias and post-1837 Sovereigns, which are sterling currency. VAT and CGT are separate questions with different answers.
Resale depends on the gold price, the condition of the note and buyer demand at the time. A collector premium is not guaranteed.
This is general information, not personal tax or investment advice. Tax treatment depends on current rules and individual circumstances.
