The musket over her shoulder and the powder horn in her hand are the ones taken from Fort William and Mary on the 10 Goldback. The 25 continues the same story a step further on.

The artwork

The virtue is Fortitudine, Fortitude, in her second appearance in a Goldback series. She wears the military coat of a minute-man over a dress carrying the vertical red and white stripes used by the early rebel colonists, the same stripes that were eventually set horizontally in the United States flag.

Beside her stands a miniature of New Hampshire's granite monument bearing the state motto, “Live Free or Die”, and the caption beneath her reads “Take Courage”.

The supporting symbols all argue the same case in different ways:

• A mother porcupine and her young at her feet — loving and calm by nature, but quilled enough to stand their ground and protect their own when they have to.
• A maple in early spring behind her, tapped with a bucket hung, for the fortitude that carries a tree through winter before the rising sap brings it back to life and rewards those who wait on it.
• Mount Washington and the historic Mount Washington Hotel in the background.

Taken together, these are the reasons “The Granite State” is such a fitting name for New Hampshire.

Who this note suits

The 25 holds 1/40 of a troy ounce of 24-carat gold, two and a half times the metal in the 10. It is the denomination that gives a New Hampshire collection some real substance, and it suits set-builders working towards the full series as well as anyone who wants a single note to frame.

New Hampshire is one of the earlier state series, which matters to collectors who follow release order rather than the newest artwork.

The honest limitation stands at every size: the premium over the gold price is substantial, and a 1/4 oz Britannia or a small bar will always give you more gold for your money. Buy the 25 for the design and the set.
