25 Nevada Goldback | Aurum Gold Foil Note (24k)

A bobcat pouncing on a tortoise is an unusual thing to find on a gold note. On the 25 Nevada it carries the whole idea of the design: Fortitude brings Victory over Vice.

The artwork

The virtue is Fortitudine, Fortitude, the third and last of the new virtues introduced by the Nevada series. She is patterned after Nike, the Greek winged goddess of Victory, and more specifically after the trumpeting angels along the walls of Caesars Palace in Las Vegas. She is understood to be sounding the first trumpet of Triumph.

The tortoise she is pitted against is the “land crocodile” of the composition, and the bobcat above it completes the theme.

• The laurel wreath on her head is a symbol of glory.
• The palm leaf in her left hand stands for triumph.
• Pillars rise out of a desert in rare “super bloom”, standing for Fortitude's part in holding Nevada and her people together in the past, the present and the future.

The planting is Nevada's own: barrel cactus, sagebrush in bloom as it appears on the state flag, and a joshua tree in flower, with further symbols hidden through the design. Red Rock Canyon near Las Vegas sits behind the whole scene.

Who this note suits

The 25 holds 1/40 of a troy ounce of 24-carat gold, two and a half times the metal in the 10, and it is the denomination that turns a Goldback collection into something with real weight. It suits set-builders working towards the full Nevada range, and it displays well because the format gives the desert scene the space it needs.

Be clear about what you are paying for. Even at this size the premium over the gold price is substantial, and a 1/4 oz Britannia or a small bar remains the better buy if gold per pound is the only measure that matters to you. The 25 is a collectable first.
