People have been walking into the Superstition Mountains after the Lost Dutchman Mine for over a century. Nobody has produced it. The 25 Arizona is about the walking, not the gold.

The artwork

The virtue is Tenacitas — Tenacity — and the setting is the country around Weavers Needle. At the centre a woman presses on through rough wilderness with a lantern in one hand and a map covered in cryptic markings in the other. She stands for every seeker who has gone looking for a mine said to hold riches nobody has ever counted.

Two details carry the legend:

• A horse skull in the foreground, pointing back to the earliest chapter of the story, when the Peralta family was ambushed and lost their pack animals
• The Peralta Stone, a real artefact cut with strange symbols that some believe encode the location of the mine

The inscription runs along the bottom: “Lost things shape those who search.” It is the most honest line on any note in the series, and the only one that treats not finding the thing as the point.

This is an Alpha Edition note, identified by the small α symbol beside the mintage date on the note itself — not by the serial number.

Who this note suits

The 25 holds 1/40 of a troy ounce of 24-carat gold. It is a step up in both size and weight, and it is where the series stops being a curiosity and starts being a meaningful piece of gold in note form.

This is a display note. The larger format gives the artwork room, and the Lost Dutchman story is the sort a piece earns its place in a frame on. Set-builders tend to buy it once the smaller denominations are already in hand.

The candid part: the outlay is real, the Alpha premium sits on top of the usual Goldback premium, and none of that premium is gold. Priced by the gram, a Britannia, a Sovereign or a cast bar wins and will keep winning. Buy the 25 for the object and the story.

UK buyer notes

Goldbacks are not UK legal tender. They can be bought, owned, sold, collected and voluntarily exchanged where both parties agree, but no UK business is required to accept one. They also do not share the Capital Gains Tax exemption that applies to Britannias and post-1837 Sovereigns, which are sterling currency. VAT and CGT are separate questions with different answers.
