Oklahoma is home to 39 federally recognised tribes. The 2 Oklahoma was shaped with cultural advisers and artists from several of them, and the theme itself was suggested by a registered Choctaw artist.
The artwork
The virtue is Benevolentia, Kindness, shown as something taught rather than declared. A Cherokee mother stands at the centre in a traditional tear dress and beaded headband, a woven basket in her arms full of what the land has given. Further back, a second mother works the harvest with a papoose on her back: the same lesson, one generation along.
The scene around them is drawn in specifics rather than generalities:
- A branch of the Eastern Redbud, Oklahoma's state tree, arching over the figures.
- The Illinois River flowing behind them, with dugout canoes crossing it and the connection to water that they stand for.
- An Asi house, representing both building skill and communal life.
- Footprints in the soil, a quiet reference to the Trail of Tears.
- A rainbow overhead for healing, hope and a better future.
The line inscribed along the bottom reads “The greatest strength is gentleness.”
Who this note suits
The 2 holds 1/500 of a troy ounce of 24-carat gold, twice the metal in a 1 note, and it tends to be the denomination people add once they have decided the format is for them. It is also the one to pick if the subject matter is why you are buying: this is the most culturally specific design in the Oklahoma series, and the detail reads far better in the hand than on a screen.
Do not buy it for the metal. At 0.002 troy oz the gold content is still small, so the price you pay is a multiple of the metal value, and a Britannia or a plain bar will always give you more gold per pound. Goldbacks earn their place as artwork and small-denomination physical gold, not as the cheapest route to bullion.
UK buyer notes
Yard Mint supplies Goldbacks from UK stock. They are treated as VAT-exempt investment-gold wafers, so there is no VAT to add at checkout.
Goldbacks are not UK legal tender. They can be bought, owned, sold, collected and voluntarily exchanged where both parties agree, but no UK business is required to accept one. They also do not share the Capital Gains Tax exemption that applies to Britannias and post-1837 Sovereigns, which are sterling currency. VAT and CGT are separate questions with different answers.
Resale depends on the gold price, the condition of the note and buyer demand at the time. A collector premium is not guaranteed.
This is general information, not personal tax or investment advice. Tax treatment depends on current rules and individual circumstances.
