Description

Every object Fiducia carries on this note is either fuel or the means to light it. The Wyoming 10 holds 1/100 of a troy ounce of 24-carat gold and builds its entire design around preparation.

The artwork

This denomination gives the series another debut: Fiducia, or Trust. She appears as a pioneer woman and future settler of Star Valley, Wyoming, following the worn path of those who went before her, and the note carries the phrase "Trust in the LORD". Her preparations are the point — she is shown doing the practical work needed to protect and follow her faith while trusting in Deity.

Split Rock, the famous formation, sits behind her. On her back is a basket of birch wood cut as kindling:

• Birch trees stand for hope and new beginnings, thanks to their year-round beauty and their early foliage.
• In some local Native American cultures the tree also carries meanings of truth and the cleansing of the past for a fresh start.
• Those associations are why birch wood has traditionally been used to make cribs for newborn babies, and the same feeling is intended here.

The wood is stored potential. In the foreground, surrounded by Indian paintbrush and sagebrush, a steel flint striker supplies the other half: the action and the labour required to spark a first flame, which then has to be tended before the new beginning amounts to anything.

The yoked oxen carry hard work, shared burdens, consistent effort, cooperation and equality — and in particular they nod to Wyoming's historical milestone of granting voting rights to women. Between the two, the design asks the viewer to follow Fiducia's example: trust what is right, and trust the example and counsel of those who went ahead of you, as the way to reach your full potential.

Who this note suits

At 1/100 troy oz the 10 is where a Wyoming set starts to carry real weight. Ten of these hold a tenth of an ounce of gold between them, so it suits a buyer who wants meaningful metal in the series without buying the largest denominations, and it is a common choice for someone consolidating a pile of smaller notes. The 14.28 cm format is also the point at which the illustration becomes genuinely readable in the hand, which makes it a strong gift or display note.
