25 Oklahoma Goldback artwork showing a woman seated on a 1960 Chevrolet Impala beside Route 66

A 1960 Chevrolet Impala, a hawk overhead and the Blue Whale of Catoosa down the road. The 25 Oklahoma sets its virtue, Hospitality, on Route 66 during the golden age of the American road trip.

The artwork

The virtue is Hospitalitas. A young woman sits on the bonnet of the Impala, unhurried, watching the traffic pass through the state she lives in.

The period is the point. To meet the steady flow of travellers, Oklahomans built roadside stops that people remembered long after they had driven on:

  • The Blue Whale of Catoosa.
  • The Round Barn in Arcadia.
  • The Pops 66 Soda Ranch.
  • The Golden Driller of Tulsa.
  • The Rock Café.

A hawk rides the air above her, standing for the freedom of the open road. The Oklahoma Rose, the state's official flower, sits in her hair and across her lap. She stands in for every Oklahoman who has poured a stranger a coffee, fixed a flat tyre, put a warm meal on the table or simply waved someone on their way.

The line along the bottom reads “The open road knows no strangers.”

Who this note suits

At 1/40 of a troy ounce the 25 carries twenty-five times the gold of a 1 note, and the premium per gram falls accordingly. This is the denomination for someone who wants one substantial Oklahoma note rather than a run of small ones, and at 15.55 cm long it works as a display piece in a way the smaller notes do not.

It is still not bullion, and it is worth being plain about that. A quarter-ounce Britannia or a 10 g bar holds far more gold for the money, and every Goldback carries a real premium for the artwork and the format. Buy the 25 because you want this note. If gold per pound is the priority, buy coins or bars.

UK buyer notes

Yard Mint supplies Goldbacks from UK stock. They are treated as VAT-exempt investment-gold wafers, so there is no VAT to add at checkout.

Goldbacks are not UK legal tender. They can be bought, owned, sold, collected and voluntarily exchanged where both parties agree, but no UK business is required to accept one. They also do not share the Capital Gains Tax exemption that applies to Britannias and post-1837 Sovereigns, which are sterling currency. VAT and CGT are separate questions with different answers.

Resale depends on the gold price, the condition of the note and buyer demand at the time. A collector premium is not guaranteed.

This is general information, not personal tax or investment advice. Tax treatment depends on current rules and individual circumstances.
