A quarter Goldback holds 1/4000 of a troy ounce of 24-carat gold. It is the smallest denomination made, the cheapest way into the series, and the note most first-time buyers pick up. Florida takes it underwater.

The artwork

A classical female figure sits at the centre of a marine scene drawn from Florida's coastal waters, surrounded by ocean life and shoreline detail. The aquatic motifs running through the composition carry the layered symbolism the series is known for — navigation, stability and renewal are all present as imagery rather than captions.

Under UV light a second layer of detail appears beneath the visible artwork. That layer is one of the harder features to reproduce and, in practice, it is the thing most owners show people first.

This is an Alpha Edition note, identified by the small α symbol beside the mintage date on the note itself — not by the serial number.

Who this note suits

Buy this if you want to hold a Goldback in your hand before committing to a larger denomination, if you are building the Florida series from the bottom up, or if you want something to give that costs little and still contains real gold.

Be clear about the trade-off. At 1/4000 oz, the gold in a quarter note is worth very little on its own, so the premium over spot is by far the highest of any denomination. You are paying for the artwork, the format and the Alpha designation, not for metal by weight. If your goal is gold per pound spent, a Britannia or a bar will beat this comfortably. If your goal is a collectable that happens to contain gold, that maths is the wrong test.

UK buyer notes

Goldbacks are not UK legal tender. They can be bought, owned, sold, collected and voluntarily exchanged where both parties agree, but no UK business is required to accept one. They also do not share the Capital Gains Tax exemption that applies to Britannias and post-1837 Sovereigns, which are sterling currency. VAT and CGT are separate questions with different answers.

Resale depends on the gold price, the condition of the note and buyer demand at the time. A collector premium is not guaranteed.
