Libertas holds the 50 in every Goldback series, so the interest is in what each state does with her. Wyoming puts her in hiking boots in Yellowstone with a torch swapped for a flashlight, on a note carrying 1/20 of a troy ounce of 24-carat gold.
The artwork
The 50 Goldback denomination is always given to Libertas. In the Wyoming design she is a mid-20th century hiker making her way through Yellowstone National Park, and the symbols around her are drawn from the Old Testament account of Deborah, the Lady of Torches.
Wild flowering raspberries surround her. She carries a pack on her back and, in her left hand, a flashlight standing in for the traditional torch. The rest of what she carries is read as follows:
- A walking staff in her right hand represents divine guidance.
- A canteen hanging from her left wrist represents the life that comes from Liberty.
- A sword hangs from her pack and a shield rests at her feet, for the constant need to be ready to defend Liberty against those who would take it away.
Behind her, an eruption from Old Faithful rises alongside a depiction of Osprey Falls. Wolves flank her and a mother grizzly bear stands at her back, carrying both the community and cooperation Liberty depends on and the fierceness sometimes needed to protect and cultivate it.
Who this note suits
This is the anchor of a Wyoming set. At 1/20 troy oz it carries fifty times the gold of the 1, and at 7.6 cm by 16.4 cm it is physically larger than every other note here — wider as well as longer — which makes it the natural framing piece and the one buyers usually reach for when they want a single, serious Wyoming note rather than a run of small ones. If you are building the series, the 50 is normally the last purchase and the one that finishes it.
The candid version: this is the largest single outlay in the set, and the premium over the spot gold price does not disappear because the note is bigger. A 1/20 oz fractional Britannia, a Sovereign or a small bar will still deliver more gold for the same spend. The 50 earns its place through the artwork, the format and its role in a complete series, not through metal value.
UK buyer notes
Yard Mint supplies Goldbacks from UK stock. They are treated as VAT-exempt investment-gold wafers, so there is no VAT to add at checkout.
Goldbacks are not UK legal tender. They can be bought, owned, sold, collected and voluntarily exchanged where both parties agree, but no UK business is required to accept one. They also do not share the Capital Gains Tax exemption that applies to Britannias and post-1837 Sovereigns, which are sterling currency. VAT and CGT are separate questions with different answers.
Resale depends on the gold price, the condition of the note and buyer demand at the time. A collector premium is not guaranteed.
This is general information, not personal tax or investment advice. Tax treatment depends on current rules and individual circumstances.
