The 50 is the quietest design in the Idaho series: a woman fly fishing at Redfish Lake, the Sawtooth Mountains standing up sharply behind her, and a twentieth of a troy ounce of 24-carat gold in the note itself.

The artwork

The virtue is Patientia, patience, drawn from Idaho's long relationship with its land and water. The scene is true to central Idaho, where people and wildlife occupy the same ground without much fuss.

• Cutthroat trout, Idaho's state fish, holding in the cold, clear water beneath the surface.
• An osprey circling overhead.
• A moose standing quietly in the shallows behind the angler.

Worked into the scene is the scripture "Rest in the Lord, and wait patiently."

Who this note suits

The 50 holds 1/20 of a troy ounce of 24-carat gold, fifty times the 1 Goldback and half the content of the 100. It is a display note first: the sort of thing that goes into a frame or the front sleeve of an album rather than being handled often, and a serious gift for someone who fishes or knows the Sawtooths.

Two things to be honest about. The premium over the gold price is real at every denomination, and the larger notes narrow it without ever making a Goldback competitive with a Britannia, a Sovereign or a bar on gold per pound spent. And larger denominations sit with a smaller pool of buyers than the small notes do, so resale depends on the gold price, condition and demand at the time. Buy the 50 because you want the piece.

Goldbacks are not UK legal tender. They can be bought, owned, sold, collected and voluntarily exchanged where both parties agree, but no UK business is required to accept one. They also do not share the Capital Gains Tax exemption that applies to Britannias and post-1837 Sovereigns, which are sterling currency. VAT and CGT are separate questions with different answers.
