Description

Florida is the only state series that put a pirate on a Goldback. The 5 carries Audax — Daring — as a privateer, and it is one of the more sharply themed designs in the whole range.

The artwork

She stands against stormy seas. Florida's waters have wrecked more ships than most coastlines, and the weather in the design is doing double duty: it stands for the literal hurricane risk and for the state's long habit of rebuilding afterwards.

On the table in front of her sit a compass rose, a navigational divider and a lantern — guidance, precision and faith, the three things you need when you cannot see where you are going. Around her neck hangs a piece of eight, a reference to the treasure lost off the Florida coast, most famously by the 1715 Spanish Treasure Fleet.

Behind her flies a pirate flag, understood to be the earliest such flag on record. The line inscribed on the note reads: “Bravery conquers the unknown.”

Who this note suits

The 5 is the middle of the range and, for a lot of buyers, the sensible one. It holds 1/200 of a troy ounce of 24-carat gold — five times the 1, twenty times the quarter — so the premium per gram is meaningfully lower than the small denominations without the outlay of a 10 or 25.

It is also the note to pick if you are buying one Florida Goldback for the design rather than building the set. The privateer is the image people remember from this series.

The caveat is unchanged: you are still paying well above the metal value. Buy it because you want the note. If you want gold by weight, a Britannia or a bar will do the job better and cheaper.
