Description

Everglades National Park was established in 1947 as the first national park in the United States created to preserve an entire ecosystem rather than a view. The 25 Florida gives that idea a figure: Conservare, the Preserver, standing in the wetland she is there to defend.

The artwork

This is the most argumentative design in the Florida series, and the only one that puts a problem on the note as well as a success. The wildlife is chosen to show both sides of the conservation ledger:

• A thriving alligator — the clearest evidence that protection can work.
• The Florida panther and the snail kite — both elusive, both still dependent on habitat that has to be actively preserved.
• A great blue heron overhead, standing for wetland restoration and what it might yet achieve.
• A Burmese python coiled in a tree — an invasive species, and a blunt reminder of how difficult this ecosystem is to keep in balance.

The design celebrates Florida's record on environmental protection and its stated ambition to “conserve the beauty” of its biomes, while crediting the people who do the work.

Who this note suits

The 25 belongs to the upper end of the series and behaves differently from the small denominations. It carries 1/40 of a troy ounce of 24-carat gold — two and a half times the 10 — so the premium per gram is among the lowest in the range, and a single note now represents a meaningful amount of metal.

It suits the collector completing a Florida set, the buyer who wants one large-format note for display, and anyone drawn to the conservation subject specifically. At 15.55 cm it is a substantial piece of artwork.

The honest caveat still applies. Even at this size, the price sits well above the gold value, and a 1/4 oz Britannia or a bar of similar weight will give you more metal for your money. The 25 earns its keep as a collectable that contains real gold, not as an efficient way to accumulate ounces.
