2025 Silver Krugerrand 1 oz SS Tilawa Privy Mark

Forged from history and reborn in brilliance. In November 1942, the SS Tilawa — a British passenger and cargo ship bound from Bombay to Durban — was torpedoed by a Japanese submarine. Along with the tragic loss of life, the vessel carried 2,400 silver bars, nearly 60 tons in total, lost to the depths of the Indian Ocean for over seven decades.

In 2017, deep-sea explorers at Argentum Exploration Ltd successfully recovered the treasure. That same silver — once buried beneath the ocean — has now been refined and struck into the globally celebrated Krugerrand series, marked with a distinctive SS Tilawa privy to commemorate its extraordinary past. The reverse features Coert Steynberg's timeless springbok antelope paired with the exclusive privy mark. The obverse displays the portrait of Paul Kruger, honouring South Africa's numismatic heritage. A true collector's piece — made with the silver recovered from the wreckage itself.
