The 1991 5 Yuan Gold Panda Large Date features a panda munching bamboo while sitting along the bank of a stream — a return to the charming, approachable bear theme after 1990's more imposing design. It is one of five BU gold Pandas minted for the year, and like many coins from this decade, it is seen far less often than dates from the 1980s.

The Chinese Gold Panda programme launched in 1982 and quickly became one of the world's most collected bullion coin series, celebrated for its annually changing reverse designs. Each coin is struck in 24-carat gold and issued as legal tender by the People's Republic of China.
