Description

Every state series ends on Libertas, and this is Florida's. The 100 holds 1/10 of a troy ounce of 24-carat gold, measures 18.4 cm across, and is an Alpha Edition — the 100 Goldback has been discontinued for future full series, so what remains is finite.

The artwork

Libertas is not standing still here. She hauls a weathered ship through turbulent water, an image taken from Cuban families escaping oppression in the 1950s and 1960s, and the strain in the scene is the message: liberty as something dragged out of difficulty rather than granted. Broken chains hang from her hand. Her seven-pointed crown reaches beyond one shoreline to liberty everywhere.

The rest of the composition builds the same idea from Florida's own landmarks:

  • The Cape Florida Lighthouse, mirroring the real beacon that met many Cuban exiles at the end of the crossing.
  • Sea turtle hatchlings on the shoreline, for resilience at its most fragile stage.
  • Shells, for protection.
  • A rocket overhead, honouring Florida's space legacy and the Apollo 11 mission.
  • A footprint in the sand, marking humanity's first step on the moon.

Refuge below, new horizons above. It is the most ambitious design in the series and it earns the capstone position.

Who this note suits

This is the completist's note. Anyone assembling a full Florida set needs it, and it is the single most substantial piece in the range: 1/10 troy oz of 24-carat gold, ten times the 10 and four times the 25, in the largest format Goldback produces. As a framed display piece nothing else in the series is close.

The discontinuation matters for a different reason than most buyers assume. It limits future supply of 100s in full series, which is a fact about production, not a promise about price. Existing notes remain collectable; what they fetch later depends on demand.

The honest position on cost: this is not a cheap way to own a tenth of an ounce. A 1/10 oz Britannia or a small bar will cost you considerably less for the same weight of gold, and it will be easier to sell quickly. You are paying for the artwork, the large format, the Alpha designation and the end-of-series status. If that is what you want, the 100 is the right note. If you want ounces, buy bullion.

Make it part of your story

Choose a Florida design for a memory of the coast, a family connection or simply the detail that catches your eye. A gold note gives that choice a physical place in your collection.

The price includes artwork and manufacture as well as gold. Condition and collector demand can affect resale.
