1. Idaho

Idaho has one of the clearest denomination-history stories. It introduced the ¼ Goldback within a full series and was the final full series to include the 100. That gives it significance at both ends of the ladder.

2. Oklahoma

Oklahoma introduced the first 3 Goldback Limited Early Release. That special issue sits outside the standard ladder and gives the series a separate collecting route alongside the ordinary set.

Best starting point: 1 for beginners; 3 LER or Alpha notes for specialist collectors.

3. Arizona

Arizona combines expanded denominations, strong Southwest artwork and its own 3 Goldback LER. It is a good series for collectors who want a modern range with a distinct regional identity.

4. Florida

Florida is commercially approachable: bright artwork, a broad denomination range and strong gift appeal. It also belongs to the expansion period that moved Goldbacks beyond the original five-note structure.

5. Utah, Nevada and New Hampshire

These are the historical core. Utah came first in 2019, Nevada followed in 2020 and New Hampshire belongs to the earliest generation. Their original designs are being refreshed to accommodate newer security features, creating a clear distinction between classic and current artwork.

6. Wyoming and South Dakota

New Entry: California

California is the newest state series and the first to reach the Pacific coast. It arrived in 2026 with the current design language already built in, which means UV-reactive artwork as standard and a ¼ denomination present from the first phase rather than added later.

Its headline collector piece is the 3 Goldback Limited Early Release, which Goldback describes as its first colourised LER. No mintage figure has been published for it, so any scarcity argument is currently unverifiable. That is the honest position on the whole series: the artwork is excellent, the release story is genuinely new, and there is no resale history at all to reason from yet.

Special Issue: Washington D.C.

Washington D.C. is a single 1 Goldback rather than a full series. It has a stated mintage of 250,000 and a separate graded colourised release from the first 2,500 examples. It suits commemorative collectors more than denomination-set builders.

Special Issue: Dallas Fort Worth

Dallas Fort Worth is another single 1 Goldback, tied to Texas and a specific regional release rather than a statewide denomination set. Its simplicity is part of the appeal: one note completes the release.

How Alpha Notes Affect Collectability

Alpha notes come from the first production run. Confirm them using the small α symbol beside the mintage date, not the serial number. How the Discontinued 100 Changes the Picture

The 100 contains 1/10 troy oz and is discontinued for future full series. Existing examples have a closed-format story, but their larger outlay and more specialist resale market make them better advanced purchases than first Goldbacks.

Limited Early Releases sit outside the standard ladder and can carry lower production numbers. Their prices can also be more volatile because the market is collector-led. Check edition, condition, grade where relevant, mintage and actual demand before paying a specialist premium.
